The Palawan Peacock-pheasant

The Palawan Peacock-pheasant, Polyplectron napoleonis also known as Napoleon Peacock-pheasant is a medium-sized, up to 50cm long, bird in the family Phasianidae. It was long known as Polyplectron emphanum (Dickinson 2001).

The male is the handsomest and most peacock-like member of genus Polyplectron. It has an erectile crest, white stripe over eye, and highly iridescence metallic green and black plumage. The tail feathers are decorated with large blue-green ocelli, which may be spread fan-like in courtship display. The female is smaller than male. It has a dark brown plumage with short crest, and whitish on throat, cheeks and eyebrow.

This gelatinous mass inhabits the deep coastal waters of Australia and Tasmania and because it mainly floats just above the bottom all the time it’s rarely seen by humans. It has no muscle mass so it can’t hunt for food, it just eats whatever edible stuff finds its way to it.

Matamata Turtle



The Matamata needs the long snout to stick it out of the water to breathe. It lives in the swamps and shallow pools of Northern Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and some areas of Brazil.

I found this very shocking file about a man eaten alive by piranhas. An excavator fell in a river in the Amazon while carrying out work on a gas-line for Petrobras. The operator broke the glass to free himself but wounded his hand trying to escape, the blood attracted piranhas.
