MANILA, Philippines – Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Manny V. Pangilinan has questioned the decision of the International Basketball Federation or Fiba forming a special commission to mediate between SBP and the old Basketball Association of the Philippines.

A year after granting recognition to the Philippines, the International Basketball Federation or Fiba has formed a special commission that threatens to revoke the blessings it bestowed on SBP.

The Fiba, through secretary-general Patrick Baumann, has summoned Pangilinan and SBP chair Oscar Moreno along with BAP president Prospero Pitchay Jr. and chair Luis Villafuerte to attend a meeting in Geneva on July 20 to resolve the dispute.

Pangilinan, often referred to by his initials MVP, was piqued by the Fiba summon, saying the world governing body for the sport failed to rationally explain the reasons for calling the meeting.

“What are the charges? Our program is not perfect but I don’t see any reason why they should bring us to court,” said Pangilinan during the press conference Wednesday at the PLDT offices.

“It’s clear in the May 13 (2008) letter that the Fiba will not recognize the BAP at all. Then all of a sudden, here comes a letter informing us about the formation of a commission,’’ added Pangilinan.

But above all concerns, the PLDT big boss has been worried sick on the repercussions it could bring to the PBA-backed Powerade Team Pilipinas, which will see action in the Fiba-Asia Championships on Aug. 6-16 in Tianjin, China.

“This is a major concern. It’s a threat that if the SBP don’t bend to the wishes of the Fiba, the Philippines will be suspended and eventually, the team will not be allowed to play,’’ said Pangilinan.

“I think it’s unfair not only to the team but to the country as well.’’
Coached by Joseller ``Yeng’’ Guiao, Powerade Team Pilipinas will attempt to secure one of three available slots in the Fiba Championships for the 2010 Fiba World Championships in Turkey.

It was the same situation the national squad made up of PBA standouts and coached by Chot Reyes got into back in 2005 when the team missed the Fiba-Asia Championship qualifying for the 2006 world championships after the country was suspended by the Fiba.

BAP officers reportedly met with top-ranking Fiba officials last month in Hong Kong without inviting the SBP.

“These people scheduled a meeting without the federation that the Fiba had recognized,’” said Pangilinan. ``It’s not the way to treat a national federation.’’

The creation of the Fiba special commission to the Philippines stemmed from the continuous complaints of the Basketball Association of the Philippines that the SBP failed to unite all basketball stakeholders in the country.

In his letter to Pangilinan on May 28, Baumann said the ``Bangkok Agreement,’’ which aimed to put all basketball associations under one roof, has not been achieved yet.

Baumann also cited the pending case filed by the BAP before the Supreme Court and the ongoing dispute between the BAP and the SBP that discredits the sport and the efforts of the national team as the grounds for the formation of the commission.

Headed by Fiba secretary-general emeritus Borislav Stankovic, the commission has Fiba honorary president Carl Men Ky Ching and Fiba legal chief Ken Madsen as members.

SBP vice chairman Ricky Vargas said the composition of the commission is already suspect with Ching, a known ally of BAP secretary general Graham Lim. Aside from Lim, Vargas added that athletics chief Go Teng Kok has a hand in the controversy.

``This is the `barkada’ system in the Fiba,’’ said Vargas. ``We will walk into a trap if we go to Geneva.’’

SBP executive director Noli Eala agreed, saying a decision to force the SBP to accede to the desires of the Fiba had already been made right after the commission was formed.

“`We’re being taken hostage here. We will not allow the Filipino athlete to be treated like doormats,’’ said SBP director Mikee Romero, who also attended the press conference along with PBA chair Joaqui Trillo and SBP officials Bernie Atienza and Moying Martelino.

Powerade 5 focuses on FIBA-Asia despite row

MANILA, Philippines - Coach Yeng Guiao said the Powerade Team Pilipinas will remain focused on its task to make the grade for the 2010 World Championship in Turkey next year despite the uncertainty of the SBP status in the Fiba roster.

Barring another suspension of the Philippines by the world governing cage body, Powerade-RP opens its campaign in the Asian world qualifier versus Sri Lanka on Aug. 6.

The Nationals next take on the Japanese on Aug. 7 then the Koreans the following day.

“Our mandate is to prepare for the Fiba-Asia Championship and we’ll do that. I’m just the coach. We’ll go where they ask us to go. We’ll take the orders from the big bosses,” Guiao told The STAR.

He, however, refused to comment on the stand the SBP took, rebuffing the FIBA orders to join the special body’s inquiry.

“That’s totally out of our control. That’s policy matters between SBP and Fiba,” said Guiao.

The SBP, under the leadership of telecoms mogul Manny V. Pangilinan, is protesting what it considers Fiba’s “unwarranted intrusion” following the world cage body’s formation of a special commission to apparently force the issue between SBP and remnants of the old Basketball Association of the Philippines.

In a press briefing Wednesday, Pangilinan and the SBP board of trustees stressed they will not participate in any proceedings to be undertaken by the commission formed by the Fiba Central Committee “in response to arising issues and various correspondences” from the BAP.

Meanwhile, the Nationals welcome the addition of Japeth Aguilar as they return to practice Monday. The 6-foot-10 Aguilar, who has just completed a stint with Western Kentucky in the US NCAA, was set to arrive last night.

Aguilar joins the Nationals as they compete in the Jones Cup in Taipei from July 18-28.

After three games in the Jones Cup, Guiao and his staff will have to decide on their Final 12 for the Fiba-Asia Championship since the deadline for submission of lineup for the Tianjin meet is July 22.

Aside from Aguilar, other players vying for slots in the Asian championship are Asi Taulava, Mick Pennisi, Sonny Thoss, Kerby Raymundo, Ranidel de Ocampo, Arwind Santos, James Yap, Gabe Norwood, Jarred Dillinger, Willie Miller, Jayjay Helterbrand, Cyrus Baguio and Ryan Reyes. Kelly Williams is out with a blood disorder problem.

SBP and PBA officials are hopeful the RP team will do well in Tianjin as besides from getting a good break on the draw, the Nationals also got a favorable schedule where they could build momentum to ride on in time for the playoffs.

The Philippines plays Sri Lanka in the 9 a.m. opening game at the Tianjin Gym on Aug. 6. RP takes on Japan at 9 p.m. the next day, then goes up against Korea also at 9 p.m. on Aug. 8.

RP Team topped AIA-Soldiers of Christ Team, 100-94.

Yung team na yun, binubuo ng NCAA Div 1 team from the US and yung RP Team, andaming mainstays na di naglaro. At ang makulit dun, ang gumawa pa para makahabol yung RP nung 3rd quarter ay yung mga bago lang sa team. Sila Belga, Arboleda at Mark Yee, hehehe. pero si Arwind, lupit, 21 pts ata or 22. Galing ni Arwind. Si Japeth, halatang nangangapa pa sa kung san pupuwesto pero kitang kita ang presence niya, intimidating saka consistent sa free throw shooting niya.

^^ Besides that, Japeth had 8 pts 6 rebs 4 blocks and a steal in 24 mins of action.

I think hes for real. In defense hes a lot better than we all expected.

MANILA, Philippines – Health issues could play a big part in coach Yeng Guiao’s final 12-man selection that will comprise Powerade-Team Pilipinas to the FIBA-Asia men’s basketball championship in Tianjin, China this August.

With just about everybody in his current 14-man pool playing according to their potentials – including new recruit Japeth Aguilar – Guiao is forced to use the well-being of the players as the key standard for their inclusion.

“We will still rely on our first criteria – the least healthy guys are going to be the prime candidates for the cutoff," said Guiao.

The national mentor has to hand down his final lineup for the FIBA-Asia tournament at least two weeks from now.

By that time, Team Pilipinas would already be in the midst of its campaign in the William Jones Cup tournament in Taipei.

“That will be the most difficult decision probably coming in the next three weeks," said Guiao.

“All of these guys have invested so much in the team, and all of them had been performing well without any exception since the SEABA (tournament last April)."

With forward Kelly Williams still recovering from a blood disorder, the arrival of the 6-foot-9 Aguilar from the States two weeks ago has brought back to 14 the number of candidates.

And though Guiao has refused to guarantee the inclusion of any player to the official lineup, it is largely believed the shot-blocking son of former Northern Consolidated center Peter Aguilar is a shoo-in.

“I would hate to cut somebody like Ryan Reyes," Guiao said. “But if he’s not healthy then we have to make that decision. I’m very hopeful, however, that he can be healthy at least for Tianjin."

Reyes joined Jayjay Helterbrand and Sonny Thoss on the bench after pulling a hamstring against Malaysia in the 8th SEABA Men’s Championship in Medan, Indonesia last April.

Helterbrand (hamstring) and Thoss (strained knee) have since returned, leaving Reyes’ condition in doubt.

Guaio admitted he’ll be in an even bigger bind if all 14 players will be healthy when the July 22 deadline comes.

“Then I will have a big headache," Guiao said. “But I would rather have that problem, choosing from 14 healthy guys, than having somebody injured." – GMANews.TV
